Ukraine: 5G in 2020
On May 17, 2019, Ukraine’s President signed a decree to launch 5G technology within the country. This action marked a significant regulatory milestone for telecommunications development.
Implementation Plan
The Ukrainian government and the National Commission for the State Regulation of Communications and Informatisation were tasked with developing and adopting “a step-by-step plan for implementing 5G technology in Ukraine in 2020.”
Historical Context
The Ukrainian President had previously issued similar decrees to advance mobile technology infrastructure. In 2014, a decree launched 3G services, followed by a 4G decree in 2015. These prior initiatives resulted in multiple auctions among mobile operators for radio frequency licenses.
